01 Schwabing, now a thriving upscale urban neighborhood, was a former artists community, is located adjacent to the popular English Garden just north of central Munich. We ate our first of many fine meals in Munich here. We also were invited to the home of Karl's old friend, Salach, for tea. Schwabing was our home during our stay in Munich. For photo images of maps of Schwabing, Munich, and Bavaria, click here.

02 Opera was the reason for spending over two weeks in Munich. David, Marty, and Sherry at the opera house of the Munich State Opera before a gala concert featuring Anna Netrebko and Ramon Vargas. Click here for more on opera in Munich. We also went to opera museum exhibits on the Libretto, Theater, and Teatro Mundi.
11 In 1961 Sherry and Marty traveled abroad for a postponed honeymoon. In August 1961, they visited Munich, Germany. Here is Marty with friends at the Augustina Brewery. Click here for more on Sherry and Marty's 1961 Travel photos.
03 No, it's not Munich. Skyline view of New York City from our hotel. In keeping with our opera theme trip, we stayed in NYC for four days. We went to New Jersey Opera in Princeton to see an opera. In addition, we visited local friends and relatives. Click here for more on NYC and click here for our day trip to NJ.
04 The English Garden is Munich's green "Central Park" where locals and tourists alike can relax and enjoy its over 800 acres of arbors, lawns, lakes, and beer gardens. Click for the Isar River. Click here to see pictures of the Koechelbal.
05 Bicycles are widely used in Munich. Dave borrowed Christa's bike and rode almost every day to various parts of Munich. Click here for more on the bicycling and bicycles on Munich, including Dave's rides along the Isar River bike path.
06 Neuschwanstein, perhaps the most widely known castle in the world is located at the base of the Bavarian Alps. We visited Neuschwanstein our last full day in Germany. We were glad we did. Click here for more Neuschwanstein. For photos of the other castles in Bavaria and Munich, click on Linderhof for Ludwig's first castle, Nymphenberg for the Bavarian royalty's main castle in Munich, and Residenz, the traditional seat of government in the heart of Munich.
07 Marienplatz ("St. Mary's Square") is the central plaza of Munich. Many of Munich's best known sites are located in and around the central square that is the Marienplatz: Hofbrauhaus, Glockenspiel, Alte and Neue Rathaus, Frauenkirche, other churches (including the famous Weiskirche and Ettal, outside of Munich), the Residenz, the opera house, Victualian market.
08
Olympic Park was built for the 1972 Olympics. The park remains a popular spot in the north part of Munich. Below the Olympic Tower are facilities for running, swimming, ice skating, skateboarding. The view is to the east and south from Olympiaberg, a hill created from the rubble of the buildings destroyed in World War II. Click here for photos of other Munich sites, the site of Oktoberfest at Theresienwiese, the ubiquitous ad kiosks.
09 Museums are legion in Munich. Sherry, Marty, Salak, Brigitte, and Karl enjoy the modern painted works in the Pinakotek der Moderne, one of Munich's newest museums, joining the venerable Alte Pinakotek and Neue Pinakotek museums. Click here for more on the Pinakotek der Moderne, and click here for the Bayerische (Bavarian State) Museum and the BMW Museum.
10 We rode the Autobaun twice into the southwest extent of Bavaria, once with Christa and once with Euraide Tours, when visited a lake in Austria. Click on the following for photos galleries on: the foothill town off Ettal with its magnificent church, Eibsee at the base of Spitzbergen, Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the alps with folk painted buildings, the pastoral valley of Graswang, and the elegant Starnberger Zee.
12 A Solar Parade highlighted solar equipment and technology available for consumers. We encountered the Solar Parade rather serendipitously, returning from the Koechelball at the English Garden. We learned a lot about solar powered cars and had a lot of fun. Click here for more Solar Parade.
10 Greenland United Airlines returned us to the USA. "Equipment" problems meant a change in flight plan. The plane was cleared to fly to the US, but it would have to keep as much as possible to a route over land. So we flew over southern Greenland. The fjords, glaciers, and ice cap of Greenland were revealed from 35,000 feet during our cloud-free flight. We arrived in Washington, D.C. where we stayed the night, too late to make a connection to San Diego.
