01 Stop 2 (continued). Skarn. Garnet in marble matrix.
02 The group geologizes around one of the shafts, partially caved. Pat brought an ultraviolet light so that we could see the fluorescence of the various minerals.
03 More exploring around the mine.
04 Dark red garnet in a marble groundmass.
05 The group is nearly invisible in the shadow next to the ruins of the headworks and cables of a mostly caved shaft.
06 Outcrops of unintruded limestone define the backside of the hill.
07 One of the abundant healthy stands of cactus that punctuate the limestone hill.
06 Phil, Pat, Sean(?), and Bob examine the features visible in the southwesterly view of the Baja landscape toward Ensenada on this somewhat hazy day.
07 Note the phases and compositions illustrated on Phil's chart.
08 The ruined foundations of the ore processing mill at the base of the mine.
09 Bob demonstrates "high wind hair" at the top of the hill.
10 Limestone weathers wickedly sharp in this arid land.
11 Next to one of the ruins, Sean finds an uncollapsed tunnel opening!
12 Hmmm. It looks pretty safe....
13 Lowell and Bob after exploring a few hundred feet into the mine.
14 Lowell adjusts to brilliant midday desert sunlight after successful exploration underground.
16 Bob exits the "fairly safe" abandoned mine tunnel.
