The compilation of a geologic guidebook is, by its very nature, an undertaking that makes use of a wide variety of data from the literature, from personal experience, and from the large reservoir of information and knowledge offered so freely by friends. This guidebook is certainly no exception, and I owe a large debt of thanks for help and encouragement to many persons.

First of all, I wish to thank Bruce Bilodeau, Erdem Idiz, Wayne Sawka and Wayne Zeck for special topical discussions on areas and problems within their expertise.

A very special thank-you goes to Steve Lipshie for his help and encouragement, and for his willingness to allow me to make such wide use of his superb guidebook (ESSSO Guidebook No. 5) on the Long Valley-Mono Craters region.

Thanks are due also to Allen Glazner and Bruce Bilodeau for the liberal use I have made of materials from their guidebook on the Mojave Desert region (ESSSO Guidebook No. 11).

A considerable part of my general knowledge of the Owens Valley region and of the geology enroute has over the years been gleaned from many readings of Bob Sharp's Field Guide to Southern California and Genny Schumacher Smith's Deepest Valley. Much thanks is due them both. A number of persons have supplied field photographs for inclusion in the several plates. They are individually identified in the plate captions and I wish to thank them for their help.

The final preparation of the guidebook has also been a team effort, and much of it was completed under pressure of deadlines. Very special thanks are due to each of the following:

The Department of Earth and Space Sciences, University of California, Los Angeles, and the Earth and Space Sciences Student Organization (ESSSO) have provided financial assistance for the project.

Finally, I accept full responsibility for any errors of commission or omission that may be contained herein.
