I rented a car for the day on Friday and drove to see the lava flow into the ocean. We were allowed only as close as a viewing area, fairly distant from the lava contacting the water. I got there around 2:30pm, and returned to the car after about 1/2 hour or so. They said the lava is spectacular after sunset when the orange incandescence can be seen. I wanted to get back to Kona, almost a 3 hour drive, but I ended up taking a nap until about 6pm, waited another hour, and saw the show after dark. It was worth it, but I got back to Kona around 11pm.
