I arrived in Kona, Hawaii, Wednesday, Aug. 27 for the Queen Lili'uokalani outrigger canoe race on Saturday, Aug. 30, from Honaunau Bay back to Kailua-Kona, for 18 miles. The race is organized by local canoe club Kai O'pua. There were over 130 men's boats. In the men's open class, there were 65 boats. He were 41st with a time of 2:29. Not bad. Our crew really did a great job, especially the second half when we really came together. The temperature was moderate, much cooler than last year, about 80. Unlike the push we had last year, no current or wind and very little swell. Light chop. But the race felt really good. The boat felt strong to the end. I paddled seat one, setting the stroke. I'm looking forward to next year, and I think the others in the crew are, too.
