We flew by commuter plane from San Diego to Los Angeles, then on Lufthansa nonstop from LA to Munich, Germany. From Munich's airport we took and airport bus to the main train station, then a train to Salzburg, Austria.
Depart San Diego around noon.
Depart LA around 5pm.
Arrive in Munich 11.5 hrs later
Airport bus, about 45 minutes.
Train to Salzburg, about 1:45.
We had excellent connections arriving in Munich airport, where the next bus left less than 5 minutes after we boarded.
We would not have been able to get the train we wished to, but because it was about 35 minutes late, we were able to take it, with only a few minutes to spare.
