The riders assemble at the starting point at 10:00 am Sunday, May 18, 2003, at Jess Martin Park in beautiful Julian. See map.

The ride starts on Highway 79 south to the Sunrise Highway. At this point we left the highway onto the old California Riding and Hiking Trail. Looking back to the southwest toward the sunrise highway, and the meadow of the Lake Cuyamaca watershed.
The trail went over a small drainage divide into this upland meadow, resplendant in mountain wildflowers of lupine, California poppy, and wild mustard.
The trail joined a dirt road, which dropped into Chariot Canyon. This area burned last summer in the Pines Fire, which started July 29, 2002, when a National Guard helicopter clipped a powerline. The fire eventually burned 62,000 acres, 37 homes, 116 outbuildings and 169 vehicles until controlled on August 22.
Looking north toward Banner. The relatively wet winter has helped many plants to recolonize the burned slopes already.
Looking southeast, the trail grades down to the bottom of Chariot Canyon.
The first sag stop provides the riders with water, bananas, oranges, bagels, bread, and peanut butter.

(Sorry, gang. That's it for this set.)
